QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuing: Considerations for Next Steps

Inuit recently announced that they would be discontinuing QuickBooks Desktop 2020 effective May 31, 2023. After that date, access to add-on services will end for the application on Windows, including all 2020 versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier and Enterprise Solutions. If you don’t use any add-ons, you can still use the Desktop program, but you will no longer have access to key functions such as live technical support, and Intuit will no longer be updating the program with the latest security releases.

If you currently use QuickBooks Desktop 2020, now is the time to evaluate your options and make the switch to a new program. Not sure where to start? Here are some helpful considerations to think through before you make the next step:

What do your current enterprise resource planning (ERP) needs look like? Where do you want them to be in the future?

ERP software typically goes hand in hand with accounting software, as it did with the Enterprise Solutions add-on with QuickBooks Desktop. How well was that add-on working for your business? There are many ERP options out there with customizable features and data integrations that make having a centralized source for all data a reality. If you have multiple locations and need to track your business’s inventory, this may be a good time to seek out a more robust ERP system.

Are you dealing with Sales and Use Tax?

If your business conducts business in multiple states, you understand the headache of navigating sales tax. When seeking new accounting system options, be sure to review how well the system can address sales tax compliance.

What kind of data are you pulling from your program? Is it insightful and actionable?

As a business owner, having actionable data to drive decision-making is crucial. Businesses generate heaps of data on a daily basis, so it’s important to have the right technology that can help you pull insights from your data so you can continually improve your processes. In your research, it’s recommended to evaluate how well an accounting system can pull the reports and data insights you need to make proactive changes to your business.

After reviewing these considerations, if you feel your accounting system is in need of an upgrade, we can help you through the process so you can find new software that can meet your needs for the short and long term.

At BerganKDV, we perform assessments for our clients that analyze the effectiveness of their current accounting processes. We can provide you with a clear view of how well your accounting processes stack up and what opportunities and gaps exist so you can improve for the future. Our team also uses the results to help determine what kind of accounting technology may be needed to accomplish your unique business goals and drive efficiencies.

To learn more about our assessment process, check out the video below from our Director of FAAST Sales, Matt West.
